Developed from the former Mt. Whitney Lumber Company town of Johnsondale, California dating back over 60 years ago, R-Ranch in the Sequoias is surrounded by the Sequoia National Forest. It lies about 25 miles north of Kernville, California in an area of transitional forest with a wide variety of plant and animal life. Since the cabins were once the homes of lumber company employees, they are each unique, though most still retain the knotty pine wood paneling throughout. Cabin sizes vary from about 400 sq. ft., once used for bachelor living, to four and five bedrooms depending upon the family needs of company employees. All cabins are available depending on the size of the party reservation. Most cabins have journals where a tradition has developed to leave a message for the next family, recording Ranch experiences, advice, humor, creative writing, nature observation tallies and even gossip, much as might have been shared over the backyard clotheslines or morning coffee break. All cabins have beds and mattresses, electricity, heat, hot water, modern plumbing, small refrigerators, stoves, dinning table, picnic table, barbeque area and basic housekeeping supplies. Many cabins can accommodate an RV beside the cabin. Most cabins have been upgraded and decorated, mainly by the owners and some efforts of cabin volunteers. Elevation is 4,700 ft. with surrounding peaks of 6,000 ft.
